SMUDGE

We raced with a dog
in childhood
Past hedges of a council estate
To a park near a stream
with beige pebbles
For adventures shared
that were great.
The dog was a friendly
mongrel, his tail wagged
He had mournful brown eyes.
How we loved this dog
of our childhood.
He ran to meet our
welcoming cries.

Because of his multi
colours, his name
we decided was Smudge.
Of the joy with his friendship
In childhood
I’ll leave the reader
to judge.

He followed us through
Fields and woodland.
With our company
He showed delight.
How we loved this dog
of our childhood.
He was scarcely out
of our sight.
He was our dearest
friend in those days
To whom I write this epitaph
How happy he made our
childhood.
I remember him
Still and laugh!
