CONFIRMED

Before she was confirmed
She believed in free love
And walked barefoot in the street.
She laughed at people’s expense,
But it was all a pretence.
There is no such thing as freedom.

When she was confirmed
She began to care for others:
her sisters and brothers.
Her family and friends left her.
She wasn’t fun any more,
Like before she was confirmed.

Being a Christian was a new role.
She felt God was guiding her soul
In a new direction.
It should have been perfection
But confirmation means duty
As well as beauty.
For there is no such thing
as freedom.
