A NEW HOME

The plastic bags were put outside today
Some memories discarded as refuse.
“We really need the room” I heard them say.
“The extra space our growing son can use.

The room will be cleaned better than before.
Let’s open up the windows wide.
We do not have the burden anymore,
But at the funeral yesterday we cried.

Our home will be more spacious
that is true.
And yesterday a miracle occurred.
Into our window suddenly there flew
A tame and very hungry little bird.”

We fed and kept the small white bird
Whose visitation seems to say
Grandfather’s spirit has sent word
That he reached heaven yesterday.

This is a poem about something that happened next door many years ago.
